After Rochester I lived in Geneva, New York, in the Finger Lakes area of the state. The weather was similar to Rochester, but with fewer snowplows to clean the streets. We also experienced many “Nor’easters” which are low pressure storm centers that cause the rain and winds as they move through and then get worse after they moved to the east of the area. Due to the counter-clockwise airflow around the low even more moisture is spun in from the Atlantic Ocean back to the northeastern United States. The following link shows what “Nor’easters” can do. Your Thursday will be hot with temperatures near 90 degrees in the Eugene-Springfield area and mid 90s in the Roseburg area. It will be even hotter Friday, but back to the 80s for the weekend. The coast will remain in the comfortable 60s. Great camping, fishing, biking, hiking, and picnic weather. Remember to drink plenty of water and wear that sunscreen.

I have lived all over the country and have experienced just about every kind of natural disaster there is except a tsunami (I never lived near the coast). I grew up in Rochester, New York, where we had long snowy winters and long hot and humid summers. Many hurricanes passed by on their way to the colder waters of the Canadian Maritimes where they usually wither and fall apart. They would say we got the “tail end” of the hurricanes. Actually we got strong winds, heavy rains, and thunderstorms as they passed by.  One snow storm in 1966 produced snow waist deep in the middle of my street. It took two days before my street was plowed out and usually the roads were cleared as the storms progressed. See this YouTube story to see what it was like. Makes you glad to live in Oregon, except for that 1969 snow storm. Blizzard of 1966

Feel free to share your disaster stories as I will give you part 2 tomorrow.

A high pressure ridge is building over us and will allow the valleys to heat up rapidly today and stay hot for a few days. Take special care to drink plenty of water and use your sunscreen when outdoors. The big rule is NEVER leave your child or pet in the car alone while you just leave them for a few minutes. It takes just a few minutes for the car to heat up enough to make it a very dangerous place. Coming up a look at where I have lived and the weather events I have experienced.

Here is a look at the fog in South Eugene about 9:15 AM Tuesday 7/14/09. The sun will fight its way through the fog and give way to a beautiful sunny & mild day.

Fog, not very dense except in the higher hills.

Thomas, This blog was still in the process of being built while the storm was in progress. Future events will be covered. This is a one-man site with an administrator so there will be a growing process. Please shoot me an email concerning private talks. I should have a picture here later this afternoon.

Welcome to my weather world. The purpose of this blog is to explain the why and how of weather events that I didn’t have the time to discuss on TV. This is your chance to ask questions and make comments on subjects usually not covered in a short weathercast. Remember, this is a “G” rated blog so please be polite with your comments.
