An upper level low will keep the airflow over the Pacific Northwest from the South and Southwest (see the little arrows) and that means rain. Eugene tied the record low yesterday dropping to 30 degrees because of the clear skies. Not as cold this morning because the clouds radiate more energy back to the ground. Clear skies allow for  radiational cooling meaning the radiation escapes away from the surface and spreads out and upward dropping the surface temperatures. Look for lots of clouds and rain today and Wednesday with highs near 60. There will be a chance of rain Thursday and just a slight chance Friday as high temperatures slowly rise to the mid 60s. More storm systems will give us the chance of rain for the weekend into early next week. The coast will be similar to the Willamette Valley while Roseburg will be a bit warmer Thursday and Friday.

Don’t forget this week’s weather quiz. What is the driest continent? Please place your answer in the comments section. The first person to post the correct answer will win one week of free weather forecasts to suit your needs. Good luck.

A Freeze Warning is in effect until 8 AM today for the Central and Southern Willamette Valley. That means lows in the upper 20s which should break the old records by a degree or two. Eugene should see a low of 25. Today, Columbus Day, will be a mix of clouds and sun and a high of 60. An Upper level low pressure trough (shaded area) will change the airflow over us so that it will come from the southwest. That means more moisture and the real Fall weather returns. There will be a 40% chance of rain late at night tonight. Tuesday will be cloudy with an 80% chance of rain high again near 60. Rain will be likely Wednesday (60% chance) with a high of 57. The chance of rain will continue through Friday night, but on Saturday it will be likely once again.

It’s Monday and means it’s time for my weekly weather quiz. Here goes. What is the driest continent? Please place your answer in the comments section. The first person to post the correct answer will win one week of free weather forecasts to suit your needs. Good luck.

Sorry, but no winner in the weekly weather quiz this week.  One guess was going in the right direction just not the right number of zeros. Here is the question: How many raindrops fall in each square yard  in a typical thunderstorm? Now here is the answer. In a typical heavy thunderstorm which produces on average one inch of rain about 3 million raindrops fall on each square yard. I’ll have another question for you on Monday.

Look for clear skies and cool temperatures overnight tonight with a low in the low 30s. After some patchy AM fog or low clouds look for mostly sunny skies  Saturday with a high of 62. Lots of sun again Sunday high near 60, below freezing overnight. The clouds will start to gather Monday, Columbus Day, for a mix of clouds and sun with the high again near 60. The big change comes Monday night and Tuesday as the rain returns until Wednesday and then showers the rest of next week. Highs will hover around 60.

An upper level low pressure trough (shaded area) will keep us in onshore flow today and that will mean a lot of clouds, but not rain. The high pressure ridge behind it will bring back the sunshine until late Monday, Columbus Day, when wet weather will return. Today’s high will be about 66, 65 tomorrow with a frosty low of 30, then back to 66 on Sunday.

This is your last chance to put in your guess. Give it a try. How many raindrops fall in each square yard  in a typical thunderstorm? Please put your answer as a comment. The first person to answer correctly will get one week of free personalized forecasts. Good luck! If nobody answers correctly I’ll have the answer for you later this evening.

An Upper level High Pressure ridge (Shaded arch offshore) will give us sunshine and steady temperatures for a couple of days through Columbus Day on Monday. Today’s high will be near 70 warmer than yesterday’s high of 65 for Eugene. We’ll see mid 60s Friday and Saturday with lots of sunshine and 68 on sunday with more sun. By Monday, Columbus Day, the trough of low pressure (shaded U west of the high pressure ridge) will move in and cool us to the low 60s through Wednesday with rain Monday and showers Tuesday.

Again, here is this week’s weather quiz question. How many raindrops fall in each square yard  in a typical thunderstorm? Please put your answer as a comment. The first person to answer correctly will get one week of free personalized forecasts. Good luck!

That High Pressure Ridge is sticking its nose into our business and that is nice.  With clear skies at night it will be frosty, but then the daytime will be sunny and slowly getting warmer. Tuesday’s low of 29 for Eugene Tuesday broke the record low record of 32 set of  in 1916. The high of 68 was just about normal for the date. Today will be mostly sunny and just a bit cooler at 66. Look for lots of sunshine and highs near 70 through Sunday. It will be a bit cooler Monday for Columbus Day and then a chance of rain Monday night and Tuesday.

A High Pressure Ridge (shaded area nosing its way into the Northwest) will bring us a lot of sunshine for the near future, at least into the weekend. With clear skies overnight the AM low should be near freezing especially in the outlying areas where frost is a possibility. Today after some early AM fog or low clouds it will be sunny with the high in the upper 60s. It will be about the same Wednesday and Thursday and then warming into the 70s and lows in the upper 30s and low 40s  continuing Friday through Sunday. There should be no significant precipitation for the next 7 days so outdoor work or play will bright and dry.

Let’s start off with the quiz for a change and have the forecast come after it. Here is a brain teaser. How many raindrops fall in each square yard  in a typical thunderstorm? Please put your answer as a comment. The first person to answer correctly will get one week of free personalized forecasts.

An upper level low, u-shaped shaded area, will move away from us while the high pressure ridge (arch-shaped shaded area) behind it will take over and bring us clear skies. Low temperatures this morning and Tuesday morning will be in the low 30s meaning we have a chance for our first frost of the season. After some early fog or low clouds look for today’s high to reach 64 under sunny skies. The sunshine continues Tuesday after AM fog/clouds warming to 69 and the rest of the week into next weekend will be in the low 70s.

After a chilly night today will be well below the normal of 70 with about a 40% chance of light rain. The high will be near 60. After some patchy morning fog or low clouds Monday will be mostly sunny with the high reaching 66. Tuesday through next Saturday will be sunny with highs right around the normal of 70. A High Pressure Ridge will move in from the Northwest to bring all of that sunshine and dry weather.

Remember, Monday I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question. The first person to answer correctly wins one week of free personalized weather forecasts suited to their needs.
