Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. You have a basement, and your friend says to go to the southwest corner if a tornado is approaching. Is that a good thing to do and why or why not? Here is the answer. Not necessarily. The SW corner is no safer than any other part of the basement, because walls, floors and furniture can collapse (or be blown) into any corner. The “safe southwest corner” is an old myth based on the belief that, since tornadoes usually come from the SW, debris will preferentially fall into the NE side of the basement. There are several problems with this concept, including: Tornadoes are not straight-line winds, even on the scale of a house, so the strongest wind may be blowing from any direction; and Tornadoes themselves may arrive from any direction. In a basement, the safest place is under a sturdy workbench, mattress or other such protection–and out from under heavy furniture or appliances resting on top of the floor above.

I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you next Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized  weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

Here is my new weekly weather quiz question. You have a basement, and your friend says to go to the southwest corner if a tornado is approaching. Is that a good thing to do and why or why not? Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized  weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Advisories: A RED FLAG WARNING IS IN EFFECT  THROUGH THURSDAY EVENING FOR THE NORTH AND CENTRAL OREGON CASCADES AND FOOTHILLS. THAT MEANS THERE IS A HIGH FIRE DANGER FOR THE AREAS LISTED. A HEAT ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM UNTIL 11 PM TODAY FOR ALL OF THE I-5 CORRIDOR FROM PORTLAND SOUTH TO COTTAGE GROVE FOR HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 90S TO NEAR 100 IN THE VALLEYS AND 90S IN THE FOOTHILLS.

We will be staying under a strengthening blocking high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape covering the Pacific Northwest) for the week assuring that we will stay from very warm to hot. It looks like a frontal system will move down from the northwest next Tuesday and that could break the back of this heat wave as long as the ridge weakens or moves to the East.
