No winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What or where is “Pangea?” Here is the correct answer. This definition is from Britanica.com:

Pangea, also spelled Pangaea,  in early geologic time, a “supercontinent” that incorporated almost all of Earth’s landmasses and covered nearly one-third of Earth’s surface. It was surrounded by a global ocean called Panthalassa. Pangea was fully assembled by the Early Permian Period, some 270 million years ago. It began to break apart about 200 million years ago, during the Early Jurassic Period, eventually forming the modern continents and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The existence of the Pangean supercontinent was first proposed in 1912 by the German meteorologist Alfred Wegener as a part of his theory of continental drift. Pangea’s name is derived from the Greek pangaia, meaning “all the Earth.” I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. Good luck.

Advisories: There is a Blue-Green Algae warning that continues for Dexter Reservoir and Dorena Reservoir has just been added to the list. Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins, state public health officials said. The algae levels are likely associated with dangerous cyanotoxin concentrations in the water that can be harmful to humans and animals. Swallowing or inhaling water droplets, as well as skin contact with water, should be avoided according to the authorities.

An upper level low (“U” shape with blue arrows) has moved to the south and is moving slowly to the North. The airflow continues to bring a chance of thunderstorms over the mountains and spread smoke from existing wildfires. The weather for the end Scandinavian Festival in Junction City will be a mix of clouds and sun, high in the mid 70s with a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm.

The Perseid meteor shower is in progress. The maximum number of “shooting stars” from the comet Swift-Tuttle will be visible after midnight today through Tuesday. There could be as many as 50 sighted per hour as they move from the NE quadrant of the sky. For best viewing go to where there are no city lights to brighten the sky. You also need for the clouds to go away so you can see the sky.

An upper level low (“U” shape with blue arrows) has moved to the south and is going to move slowly to the North and East later in the week. The airflow continues to bring a chance of thunderstorms over the mountains and spread smoke from existing wildfires. The southerly airflow for the next couple of days will mean that smoke from those wildfires will remain in the Willamette Valley. The weather for the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City that begins today and continues through Sunday will be partly cloudy in the 80s with a slight chance of a thunderstorm with patchy smoke hanging around. I’ll keep you updated on that as we get closer to the weekend.

The Perseid meteor shower is in progress. The maximum number of “shooting stars” from the comet Swift-Tuttle will be visible after midnight Sunday through Tuesday. There could be as many as 50 sighted per hour as they move from the NE quadrant of the sky. For best viewing go to where there are no city lights to brighten the sky.

An upper level low (“U” shape with blue arrows) has moved to the south and is settling to the along the California/Oregon coast sending warmer air our way. High pressure (“Arch”shape in blue arrows) has take over long enough to heat us up a bit. The airflow continues to bringing a chance of isolated, mainly dry, thunderstorms over the mountains and spread smoke from existing wildfires. The southerly airflow for the next couple of days will mean that smoke from those wildfires will seep into the South Willamette Valley. The weather for the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City that begins Thursday and continues through Sunday will be partly cloudy and cooler, in the 80s.
