Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is an “Urban Heat Island?” Here is the correct answer. An “Urban Heat Island” is the increased air temperatures in urban areas in contrast to cooler surrounding rural areas. It is caused by the solar radiation in the city being reflected back to the streets from the glass and concrete buildings and being held by the pavement.  I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz starting Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count. So, your Saturday didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. The clouds got stuck in the South Willamette Valley as they have been known to do and we never heated up to my predicted high, 74 instead of 89. A cold front will be approaching the Oregon coast by the end of next week. Autumn begins at 1:44 PM next Sunday September 22nd, so Summer is nearly over.

Good luck.

Advisories:

A Blue-Green Algae warning continues for Dexter Reservoir, Dorena Reservoir, and Fern Ridge Reservoir, and farther away at Devils Lake. Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins, state public health officials said. The algae levels are likely associated with dangerous cyanotoxin concentrations in the water that can be harmful to humans and animals. Swallowing or inhaling water droplets, as well as skin contact with water, should be avoided according to the authorities.

________________

An upper level trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shape offshore) is moving toward the Oregon coast to replace the high pressure ridge (Shaded “Arch” shape) that gave us way above normal temperatures. So, your Saturday didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. The clouds got stuck in the South Willamette Valley as it has been known to do and we never heated up to my predicted high. A cold front will be approaching the Oregon coast by the end of next week. Autumn begins at 1:44 PM next Sunday September 22nd, so Summer is nearly over.

An upper level high pressure ridge shaded “Arch” shape has taken over our weather for a while and will stay put through the end of the week then another upper level low pressure trough will move toward the Oregon coast to replace it. A frontal system will edge its way into Oregon by early next week and that should start to rapidly cool us back down and possibly produce some precipitation. Autumn begins at 1:44 PM Friday September 22nd, so Summer is nearly over. Gret ready for a drastic chance in temperatures from near 90 this week to the 70s next week.
