Comments Off on Rain + Freezing rain = slippery roads this morning
Category: Uncategorized

The upper airflow(look at the little arrows along the coast) is “zonal” meaning straight lie west to east bringing warmer more moist air into Oregon. A frontal system is pushing into northern California (see last frame of animation). It is spreading moisture northward over us. Freezing rain and sleet are falling in the area because of that warm moist rolling over the cold air mass that is still over us.

The upper airflow(look at the little arrows along the coast) is swinging around to start bringing warmer more moist air into Oregon. A frontal system is pushing through northern California (see last frame of animation). It will  spread moisture northward over us. That sets up a situation that could produce some nasty weather conditions, especially when that air mass first gets here. Be careful out there because the roads could get very slippery.

Tim Fassbender correctly answered the question. Here it is again. What time zone or zones help to tell the time at both the North and South Poles?

Here is his answer. There is no permanent human presence at the North Pole, and no particular time zone has been assigned. Polar expeditions may use any time zone that is convenient, such as GMT, or the time zone of the country they departed from. The South pole has numerous manned facilites but normally time there is based upon New Zealand time zone since that is where their supplies are generaly sent from. I suppose you could say both poles are based upon GMT time with corrections to whichever national time zone they wish to coordinate from. For six months of the year the south pole doesn’t see the sun so being a Land Surveyor I couln’t give you a sun shot for half a year to tell you the correct time.

The most common time zone used is UCT, Universal Coordinated Time, also known as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time ) which is the time in Greenwich, England.

There will be another weather quiz question next Monday.

An upper level low (shaded area) is bringing cold Arctic air through Canada to us. A colder blast of Arctic air is moving in from the North producing  maybe a few snow flurries, but again no accumulation expected, so far anyway. The colder weather will last well into next week.

Here is my weather quiz question for this week. I picked this one because of our colder than normal temperatures. What time zone or zones help to tell the time at both the North and South Poles? Please place your question as a comment after this post. The first person to post the correct answer  will win one free week of personalized forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.
