We have a winner! Congratulations Rosemary. You were the first person to post the correct answer to my weather quiz question.

________________

Here’s the question for the last time. What does it mean when flocks of seagulls are seen hanging around the parking lots of schools and grocery stores in the Willamette Valley. Rosemary’s answer: ” When the weather is stormy and the surf is rough, the seagulls come inland to get food.”  My detailed answer: The seagulls move inland on the higher winds ahead of a storm moving onshore. With rough seas and strong winds it is easier for the seagulls to fly eastward and stop off at grocery store parking lots and school parking lots where they can find discarded food scraps. I’ll have a new weather quiz question for you next Monday. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

An upper air trough of low pressure (“U” shape on the orange line) has increased onshore airflow bringing in more clouds and chances for rain all week long. A frontal system moved through Oregon last night spreading showers eastward and a second front will move in behind it. Another frontal system will approach the coast by late into the weekend.

A high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on both lines) has brought sunshine and warmer temperatures to the Pacific Northwest, but now an upper air trough of low pressure (“U” shape on orange line) will increase onshore airflow bringing in some more clouds and slight chances for rain beginning by late this afternoon. There will be a slight (20%) chance of showers today as the Rhododendron Festival wraps up today. The chance of rain will increase tonight and Monday as more disturbances head our way. Sorry, but no winner this week. Here’s my weekly weather quiz question for the last time this week. This week’s question is: what is the “Heat Index” and why is it important to know what it is? Here is the answer. The heat index (see chart below) is the “feels like”, or apparent, temperature. As relative humidity increases, the air seems warmer than it actually is because the body is less able to cool itself via evaporation of perspiration. As the heat index rises, so do health risks. When the heat index is 90°-105°F, heat exhaustion is possible. When it is above 105°F, it is probable. Heatstroke is possible when the heat index is above 105°F, and very likely when it is 130°F and above. Physical activity and prolonged exposure to the heat increase the risks. For more details and a heat index chart go to: this address . I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday.

A high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on both lines) has brought sunshine and warmer temperatures today to the Pacific Northwest. An upper air trough of low pressure (“U” shape on orange line) will increase onshore airflow bringing in some more clouds and slight chances for rain beginning by late Sunday. The chance of rain will sneak in late Sunday night and Monday as more frontal systems head our way. For you skywatchers there will be an annular eclipse of the Sun on Sunday evening. Western Oregon is off the path of best viewing, but you should be able to see the moon, as long as the thicker clouds don’t move in, covering most of the Sun with a bigger area of sun visible at the top curve of the moon. For viewing instructions go to this address . Look for a mix of clouds and sun today, partly cloudy tonight, mostly cloudy Sunday in Florence for the 105th Rhododendron Festival. There will be a slight chance of sprinkles Sunday afternoon, but that shouldn’t hamper any of the festivities. For more details concerning the weekend’s events go to: Rhododendron Festival calendar from the Florence Chamber of Commerce.
