Short-lived high pressure (shaded “Arch” shaped area offshore) brought out the sunshine Sunday warming us up more than I expected and should hold off more wet weather until midweek. A cold front moved into Oregon bringing the temperatures down, but they will still be a bit above normal. A trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shaped area with blue arrows in the Gulf of Alaska) will move in behind the ridge sending waves of moisture at us. A frontal system will push into Oregon Wednesday with more behind it bringing increasing waves of rain.

Sorry, no winner this week. Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. What is the difference between a “Typhoon” and a “Hurricane”? Here is the correct answer. A tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained surface wind (using the U.S. 1-minute average) is 64 kt (74 mph or 119 km/hr) or more. The term hurricane is used for Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclones east of the International Dateline to the Greenwich Meridian. The term typhoon is used for Pacific tropical cyclones north of the Equator west of the International Dateline. I’ll have a new weekly weather quiz question for you Monday. Hope you remembered to “Fall Back” to Standard Time at bedtime Saturday night. The official time change was at 2 AM today to set your clocks back one hour. The Fire Department suggests that you check the batteries in your smoke detectors and replace them if necessary and the same goes for CO2 detectors and Radon detectors. Make sure they are working properly.

Don’t forget to “Fall Back” to Standard Time at bedtime Saturday night. The official time change is at 2 AM Sunday, but you don’t have to stay up that late to set your clocks back one hour. The Fire Department suggests that you check the batteries in your smoke detectors and replace them if necessary and the same goes for CO2 detectors and Radon detectors. Make sure they are working properly.

A frontal system is moving into the Pacific Northwest allowing for a better chance of rain. There will be a chance of showers for the weekend into next week as a trough of low pressure (Shaded “U” shaped area with blue arrows in the Gulf of Alaska) continues to send waves of moisture at us.

An upper level low (shaded “U” shape) has been sending copious amounts of moisture at us. That moisture is coming from Hawaii and it is nick-named “The Pineapple Express.” A strong frontal system is being pushed through the Pacific Northwest dropping significant rain on us. There will be a break from the rain as weak high pressure (“Arch” shape in blue arrows offshore) takes over late tonight through Friday. We’ll be back to a chance of showers for the weekend into next week.
