We have a winner! Here is the question again. There is a high speed river of air found in the middle and upper portions of the troposphere that helps control the movement of surface storm systems. What is it called? Congratulations to Dennis he’s the first person to post the correct answer “the jet stream.” That means he’s the winner of one week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to his needs, as long as he has not won my weekly weather quiz within the last 6 months. That’s just to make sure the same people don’t keep winning to often. I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you next Monday. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized forecasts tailored to your needs.

_______________

An upper level trough of low pressure (“U” shaped section of shaded area over Oregon) has kept the clouds, rain, and cool temperatures around for too long. High pressure (“Arch” shaped section of shaded area offshore) will be taking over and clearing the skies, warming the temperatures, and keeping the rain away for a quite a while. A weak frontal system will slide through early next week, but all it will do is cool us down a bit and then we’ll warm up and still be dry for the rest of the week. It’s about time.

trough of low pressure (the “U” shaped dip in the jet stream over the Pacific Ocean just offshore) has helped to push a frontal system into the Pacific Northwest that brought back the rain. Weak high pressure aloft gave us a nice day Monday. A flat ridge of high pressure (a small “arch” just hitting the shore) will move eastward letting low pressure replace it. Tuesday we were looking for more sunshine, but saw more clouds instead and no afternoon rain in the Valley because of that high, but  a new surface disturbance will be pushing through keeping us wet until the weekend. That means wet weather for the first half of the NCAA events, but sunshine and warmer for the Saturday events. The weak, flat high pressure ridge that brought the sunshine to the Valley early Saturday is being replaced by low pressure (the “U” shaped dip in the jet stream over the Pacific Ocean). After some more wet weather there will be some sunshine early in the week, Monday and Tuesday, but by Tuesday night and Wednesday a new frontal system will be moving through. If that’s not enough for you another frontal system will be approaching from the northwest by sometime Thursday .
