The upper air flow is bending more from the west (called Zonal flow) bringing in warmer, but still very moist air into the Pacific Northwest.  A frontal system pushed into Oregon and that will insure we will see a lot of rain. The enhanced satellite loop over 3 hours shows the moisture coming our way is moving in from the sub-tropics, otherwise known as the “pineapple express.” Remember that, particularly this time of the year, when it’s not raining it is usually fogging.

We have a winner!

Congratulations Big Daddy Chris you are the winner. Here is my weather quiz question for the last time. What is the free air freezing level? Here is your answer: Isn’t the free air freezing level the altitude point where the tempurature drops to freezing? 32 f or 0 c. so if you live above that level you can expect it to be freezing or lower. Here is and expanded answer. The free air freezing level is referring to the height at which the temperature of the atmosphere drops to 0 deg C.  The  ”free air” freezing level is meant to distinguish in complex terrain such as mountains between subfreezing air which can settle in low areas such as valleys due to temperature inversions and the actual freezing level which is aloft in the atmosphere. I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you starting next Monday. You’ll post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments”in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized  weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

Another storm system will bring some warmer air in today, so you can forget about the freezing rain and snow for a while at least. More storms will be headed toward us like this one that will move in Saturday .

The upper air flow trough of low pressure (“U” shape shaded area over the Pacific Northwest)  is setting up over us with more Pacific moisture .  A cold front has sagged through the region bringing possible freezing rain or freezing fog back to the area.  With the colder air already here that could mean a winter mix of rain and snow even down to the valleys today and tonight, but so far it  looks like that will stay north of Salem. Another storm system will bring some warmer air in by Wednesday.
