high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on orange line) is moving eastward away from as an upper level low pressure trough (“U” shape on orange line) moves up increasing onshore airflow bringing in some more clouds with the chance of precipitation mainly in the foothills and Cascades. I don’t see any measurable precipitation being produced from it locally. The chance of rain will sneak in late Sunday night and Monday as a parade of frontal systems heads our way. For you skywatchers there will be an annular eclipse of the Sun on Sunday evening. Western Oregon is off the path of best viewing, but you should be able to see the moon covering the lower 2/3 of the Sun. For viewing instructions go to this address

high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on orange line) has taken over bringing us sunny and warmer conditions. An upper level closed low (orange circle off the California coast) will move eastward south of Oregon and bring in more clouds with the chance of precipitation and thunderstorms mainly in the foothills and Cascades.

Sorry, but no winner this week for my weekly weather quiz question.

________________

Here is my weekly weather quiz question for the last time. We all know that lightning is dangerous, but there is one direct beneficial aspect to lightning. What is it? Here is the correct answer. Lightning helps plants. The air in our atmosphere is about 78% nitrogen, but it is in a form that plants cannot use. Lightning helps dissolve the nitrogen into the water to create a natural fertilizer so plants can absorb it through their roots. Lightning also produces ozone, a gas that helps protect the Earth from the dangerous rays of the sun and lightning helps to maintain the electrical balance of the Earth. Please remember to post your answer as a comment by clicking on “no comments /comments” in the upper right hand portion of this page under the caption, then add your comment. The first person to post the correct answer will win a week of free personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. The answer has to be a comment to win. An email answer will not count.

_______________

high pressure ridge (“Arch” shape on orange line) has taken over bringing us sunny and warmer conditions continuing into next week. A weak frontal system will brush the northern reaches of Oregon between Monday and Tuesday bringing in more clouds with the chance of precipitation and thunderstorms mainly in the foothills and Cascades. By late in the week a trough of low pressure (“U” shape on the orange line) will move in returning the chance of precipitation and maybe a thunderstorm at the coast and in the mountains Thursday.
