A High Pressure Ridge ( as shown by the yellow arched line) is strengthening over the Eastern Pacific and will slowly migrate to the eastward over us. That means it will get hot. A Heat Advisory is in effect from Noon until 10:00 PM tonight. An Excessive Heat Watch is in effect from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening. The Willamette Valley will see highs warming into the low to mid 90s today and the mid to upper 90s to near 100 Wednesday and a bit cooler Thursday. It will be even hotter in the Umpqua Valley with Roseburg having a chance to get into triple digits on Wednesday. A weak cold front should cool temperatures for the end of the week and the weekend.

Don’t forget the weekly weather quiz. The first person to answer the question correctly will win one week of free personalized weather forecasts. Please place your answer as a comment on this blog. Here’s the question: Which President of the United States died as an indirect result of being too stubborn to wear a coat and hat to his own inauguration when the weather was cold and blustery? Good luck. You have the rest of  the week to come up with the answer.

Be prepared for the valleys to reach the mid 90s by mid-week and the Umpqua Basin could reach triple digits. The coast temperatures will increase also rising into the 70s. By the end of the week a cold front will bring us back to normal temperatures.

I have a stair step forecast for you. For the next few days temperatures will rise significantly each day. Today we’ll see lots of sunshine with valley temperatures in the upper 70s. Tomorrow mostly sunny warming to the mid 80s. Then the beginning of next week will sizzle into the low to mid 90s. You knew it had to get hot for the Lane County Fair next week. The coast will stay in the lower 60s for the weekend and then warm to upper 60s early next week. Florence will warm to the low 70s.

Clouds kept the valleys cooler on Thursday, but that will be changing. An upper level trough of low pressure will push eastward out of the area by the weekend allowing a high pressure ridge to move in from the Pacific Ocean to bringing much warmer temperatures with it. Today we’ll see a mix of clouds and sun with a high temperature in the low to mid 70s. Much the same will happen on Saturday warming to near 80. Nice weather for the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City. Look for the mid 80s for Sunday followed by 90s for next week to start the Lane County Fair.

There was no winner in this week’s quiz. The question was: How much of the Earth was covered by glaciers during the ice ages?  The answer is 10% of the Earth was covered by glaciers during the ice ages. Another quiz question will be posted next Monday.  The winner will get one week of personalized forecasts for free.

Temperatures will reach  the mid 70s in the valleys today and near 80 on Friday. The coast will see some drizzle with high temperatures in the mid 60s.

The weekend will be a different story. A strong high pressure ridge will develop over the Pacific and start heating us up.

The valleys will see the 90s return next week for a serious summertime warm-up. That means be prepared to drink more water, use more sunscreen, and take extra care of your outdoor pets.

National Weather Service radar shows an area of showers from Florence through Corvallis, Salem, and Portland. That line of showers will slowly move southward this evening as a weak cold front slides through. We have a chance of seeing some rain in the valleys this evening and overnight and again tomorrow morning and afternoon. There probably won’t be enough rain to prevent the necessity of watering your lawn, but every little bit helps.

Your Tuesday starts of with clouds and will break out to a mix of clouds and sun  for most of the day. The high will be in the upper 70s. There will be more clouds on Wednesday and Thursday but the temperatures will still be in the upper 70s. For Friday a mix of clouds and sun after morning clouds. There will be a lot more sunshine over the weekend. Don’t forget my new quiz which starts each Monday. How much of the Earth was covered by glaciers during the ice ages? Look for a mix of clouds and sun for the next few days with high temperatures in the low to mid 80s.  An upper level trough of low pressure will move through on Wednesday bringing mostly cloudy skies. The computer models don’t agree on whether or not there will be any precipitation associated with it so it’s best to be prepared for at least a slight chance of sprinkles Thursday and Friday with some sunshine Friday afternoon.

I’m starting a bit of a contest. Each Monday I will ask a weather question and the first person to answer the question correctly in the comments section of this blog will win one week (7-days) of free personal forecasts tailored to your specific needs. Here’s the question for this week: Since there has been so much discussion about “Global Warming” let’s go in the opposite direction. How much of the Earth was covered by glaciers during the ice ages? Your answer should be in a percentage form. Leave your answer as a comment and the first one to get it right will win. I will, of course, need the winners email address so I can get back to you. Good luck.
