This week’s Weather Quiz Question is : What provides the energy to drive the Earth’s weather system? Please place your answer as a post after this forecast section. The first person to post the correct answer will win one week of personalized weather forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck!

_______________

The beginning of the week will be dry because of a high pressure ridge, but low pressure behind it will return us to wet weather as more frontal systems head our way. We should be happy with our “El Nino” winter that has given us warmer than normal temperatures. Much of the eastern third of the US has been setting records for low temperatures and having to dig out of inches to feet of snowfall.

The “El Nino” weather pattern will continue to control our weather keeping us above normal for temperatures and below normal for precipitation. An upper level trough of low pressure (see blue arrows over the Pacific Northwest forming the letter “U”) is sending a new storm system through California with some of the split energy bringing some showers to us. Today and most of Monday will be drier, but a new series of weak frontal systems will move in next week bringing back the chance for more rain.

Sorry, no winner in this week’s weather quiz. Here is the question again. Wind does actually “whistle through the wires.” What is the name given to the distinct musical or humming sounds made by the wind?   The sounds are called “aeolian sounds” and are caused by strong winds flowing past roughly circular objects such as wires and tree branches producing eddies in the air flow. These can often be heard as distinct musical or humming sounds.  I’ll have another weekly weather quiz question for you Monday. Remember the first person to post the correct answer will win one week of personalized forecasts tailored to your needs. Give it a try!

Please place your answer as a comment on this page. The first person to post the correct answer will win one week of personalized forecasts tailored to your needs.

The “El Nino” weather pattern will continue to control our weather keeping us above normal for temperatures and below normal for precipitation. An upper level trough of low pressure (see blue arrows over the Pacific Northwest forming the letter “U”) is sending a new storm system that is still offshore our way. For the weekend weak High Pressure will hold off new storms and keep us dry, for the most part.
