An  upper level High Pressure ridge (the “arch” shaped portion of the yellow lines) is slowly moving away from us. A trough of low pressure is slidding down from the Gulf of Alaska and it will move eastward just to the north of us. That will increase the onshore airflow and cool us off some more . A cold front will drop down from the northwest mid to late in the week and it looks like it will have little or no effect.

_______________
Sorry no winner this week. Here it the question one more time. This is the description of an Oregon disaster. “Every major highway in Oregon was closed, cutting off entire cities from emergency supplies. Fifteen people were killed and more than 11,000 were homeless. The governor activated the Civil Defense emergency radio network for the first time in Oregon history to declare the entire state a disaster area.” What was the disaster and when did it occur? Here is the answer. This was the Christmas week flood of 1964. The storms began in late November, when rain saturated the soil. Then Arctic air moved south into Oregon on December 17th, freezing the ground statewide. The next day a front from the tropics collided with the cold air, dumping snow on top of the ice. The Coast range had a foot of snow, the Cascades had three feet of snow, and even Portland got 8 inches of snow. The temperature then rose sharply on December 19th and the warm torrential rains melted the snow. The result was that half of the state’s weather station set all-time records that december. Eugene received 21 inches of rain and towns along the Rogue River measured a staggering 41 inches of rain. I’ll have another weather quiz question starting next Monday. The first person to post the correct answer will win one week of  free personalized forecasts tailored to your needs.

Here’s my weekly weather quiz question. Please place your answer as a comment after the forecasts. The first person to post the correct answer will win one week of  free personalized forecasts tailored to your needs. Good luck.

A stronger  upper level High Pressure ridge (the “arch” shaped portion of the yellow lines over the Pacific) is moving toward us and will switch our airflow from onshore to offshore warming us up quite rapidly. Most locations in the valleys will see 90 degrees and  above this week as a result of that strong high pressure ridge. It will cool a bit but still be very warm and dry this weekend for the Oregon Country Fair.

Advisories:  A HEAT ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM THURSDAY FOR THE COAST RANGE, THE ENTIRE I-5 CORRIDOR FROM PORTLAND THROUGH EUGENE AND SOUTH TO COTTAGE GROVE, THE CASCADE FOOTHILLS (INCLUDING THE FOOTHILLS OF LANE COUNTY), AND THE UPPER HOOD RIVER VALLEY.
